Tsunami - Newspaper Article
It was on December 26, 2004 when it happened. Yes, the day when the earth spun a little faster, the day when 250,000 people in 12 different countries died, the day when the wave shook the world. It happened on any regular day. Two tectonic plates were pushing against each other when one plate gave way to subduction. However while doing this, the top plate suddenly collapsed on the bottom plate, sending an enormous amount of pressure to the top of the ocean, making an underwater earthquake. When the earthquake emerges to the surface of the ocean, it'll create a four-way tsunami.
As soon as that happened, tsunami sensor buoys sent a signal to the warning center. How do these work? It's quite simple: when a buoy senses an earthquake, they send a message to a satellite to which the satellite sends the information to the warning center. The warning signal was sent to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii. Usually the earthquake scientists are paged when an earthquake of a factor of 6 or larger occurs: this was a factor of 8 and growing! They had 6 buoys in the Pacific Ocean, however they are none in the Indian Ocean. The scientists saw that the earthquake was shallow, it was 30 kilometers deep. It was very serious, and decided whether they should send a warning to anyone.
The tsunami struck many countries. It all struck at the Asian and African areas. There were many casualties. Buildings were destroyed, Dead people were everywhere. There were not many survivors. The tsunami was huge, it destroyed everything in its path with no mercy. After it was done, people thought they were safe. They were wrong, another even bigger one appears after that. There are signs that you can tell whether or not a tsunami will occur. When you are at the beach and suddenly the water is sucked out and exposes the ocean floor for a mile away, there will be a tsunami. When this warning happens, people think nothing of it. In fact, people even go closer to see what's going on and that is their downfall. After the tsunami happened, the warning center decided to put 39 more buoys in order to prevent this kind of catastrophe from ever happening again. I pray that we can do that so no more people will die a horrible death.
