Bill Nye - Buoyancy Notes
1. What does it mean to " displace " water? Explain
Displacing water means to push water out the way, and the amount of water that you push out will weight as mush as you.
2. Explain why the clay ball sinks but the same size clay boat floats.
The clay ball sinks and the same size clay boat floats because the boat has more surface area.
3. Things displace as much water as they weigh.
4. Who was Archimedes ? What did he discover?
Arcchimedes was a greek guy that discovered how much water something displaces when they sink while he was taking a bath, or volume.
5. How do fish control their buoyancy ? Explain.
Fish control their buoyancy by having a swim bladder that regulate their air.
6. Define the following
Negatively Buoyant - sinks
Positively Buoyant - floats
Neutrally Buoyant - neither
7. Explain how hot air balloons work.
Hot air balloons have fast molecules inside the balloon which makes it float.
