This article it is about how jellyfishes energy can be used to build bio - inspired jellyfishes for the U.S. Navy. The researchers found how jellyfish move by their contraction and expansion of their bell-shaped body to create a vortex to push them forward. Shashank Priya the professor of mechanical engineering says, "the feat of motion allows the creature to travel 30 percent farther each stroke cycle, thereby reducing metabolic energy demand by swimming muscles." Turner Fellow is also a professor of mechanical engineering says, "The fluid is helping the jellyfish to move and conserve the energy." This study was led by the Marine Biological Laboratory, based in Woods Hole, along with Virginia Tech. In 2012, several of the smaller robotic jellyfish were released, they inhabit every oceanic area of the world and is capable of withstanding a wide range of temperature in fresh and salt waters. They are researching this, so this can help the U.S. Navy.
I chose this article because i never knew alot of things about jellyfishes and if they were useful to us human beings or not. But now i know they have a purpose. The most interesting thing to me is how they create a vortex to move forward. This reminds of spongebob because in spongebob, the jelly fishes contract and expand their bellies to move forward.
Now that we can use this as transportation for the U.S. Navy, we can probably create weapons using the jellyfishes stingers and poison. Now we can use the fluid that jellyfishes use that conserves energy in our transportation.
