Goal:
Replicate some (but not all) aspects of oil and natural gas formation
Replicate some (but not all) aspects of oil and natural gas formation
Pre - Lab Questions:
1. Some conditions required for there to be oil or natural gas production in the earth is for heat, pressure, and dead phytoplankton.
2. Oil takes about 200 million years for it form.
1. Some conditions required for there to be oil or natural gas production in the earth is for heat, pressure, and dead phytoplankton.
2. Oil takes about 200 million years for it form.
Procedure:
1) Measure two cups of lightly crushed iceberg lettuce
2) Place one cup of lettuce in a ziplog bag and label the bag "warm." Place the other cup of lettuce in a ziplog back labeled "cold."
3) Distribute the lettuce along the bottom of each bag and roll the bags from the bottom to remove as much air ass possible. Seal each bag.
4) Unroll and observe each bag now and each day for the next two weeks. See the "observations" lab select.
5) Place the bag labeled "cold" in a refrigerator.
6) Note the temperature of the refrigerator and room.

Lab Questions:
1) The conditions needed for oil or natural gas to form are the refrigerator or outside area.
2) The changes i observed was each day i received the bag of lettuce, it was getting browner and more rotten. It started to get more liquid in the warm bag, and in the cold bag it was getting more brown. The stench was very disgusting.
3) I expected the warm bag to be more brown and nasty. The cold bag was supposed to be brown and rotten and it was.
4) Yes there was differences between the "warm" and "cold" bag. The cold bag was not as liquidy and the warm bag was almost like water because of all the oils it released. This relates to oil and natural gas formation because the warm bag released fumes and liquid, just like how oil is formed by the dead phytoplankton.
